AGROCAT – GENOMREPIG – PID (CDTI)

Agropecuaria Catalana (AGROCAT), an agricultural cooperative based in Sant Fruitós de Bages (Barcelona), provides key services to the livestock sector, particularly swine, ranging from feed production to genetics, health, and specialised logistics.

In recent years, the sector has experienced increased mortality and reduced efficiency, largely due to the impact of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), against which current vaccines have limited effectiveness.

To address this challenge, AGROCAT launched the R&D project GENOMREPIG, a “Study of Marker-Assisted Genetic Selection of Resilient Animals to Improve Sustainability in Swine Production.” The goal is to develop and validate a genetic selection strategy based on resilience markers, enabling the identification of animals more resistant to diseases, thereby improving productivity, reproductive performance, and longevity.

With support from Evolution Europe, AGROCAT submitted a high-quality technical proposal that was successfully approved by the CDTI (Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology), securing over €900,000 in funding through the PID (Research and Development Projects) program, in the form of a partially repayable loan and direct grant.

The project will help reduce mortality, improve efficiency, and move toward a more profitable, sustainable swine production with reduced antibiotic use. AGROCAT thus positions itself as an innovative player committed to high-impact technological solutions for the future of the agri-livestock sector.
