The CDTI’s Misiones Ciencia e Innovación programme promotes collaborative industrial research projects addressing major technological and societal challenges aligned with Spain’s strategic priorities in innovation and industrial competitiveness.

The programme offers high-intensity grants for business consortia with mandatory participation by research organisations, in a competitive call designed to generate long-term technological and socio-economic impact.

About this programme

Misiones Ciencia e Innovación is the CDTI’s strategic programme that funds large collaborative industrial research projects aimed at solving high-impact technological and social challenges. Its objective is to promote business consortia working on key missions for Spain’s competitiveness and technological sovereignty.

Who can participate (beneficiary entities)

A consortium of 3 to 6 companies may participate, including at least 1 SME and 2 autonomous entities. The companies must be based in Spain, and one of the partners must serve as the project coordinator.

Types of projects

Funds industrial research projects aligned with one of the strategic missions defined by CDTI for the 2026 call.

CDTI missions for 2026

The missions for the 2026 call are currently being defined through a co-design process led by CDTI with stakeholders from the Spanish innovation ecosystem.

Nine mission areas are currently under discussion, grouped into three domains:

Industrial

  • Resilient energy systems
  • Industrial sovereignty based on AI and quantum technologies
  • Circular economy and recovery of critical materials

Bioeconomy

  • Food sovereignty and agri-food digitalisation
  • Removal of emerging water contaminants
  • Technological prevention of forest fires

Social

  • Pharmaceutical solutions against antimicrobial resistance
  • Affordable housing through industrialised construction
  • Technologies to improve quality of life for older people

The final call is expected to include 3–5 missions.

Terms and conditions of funding
  • High-intensity grants: up to 80% for small businesses, a lower percentage for medium-sized businesses, and up to 65% for large companies.
  • Eligible expenses: personnel, equipment, materials, and subcontracting with research organisations.
  • Eligible for audits up to €1,500/year.
  • Eligible coordination travel up to €5,000 per beneficiary.
  • Indirect costs of 20% of direct costs.
Deadlines

The next Misiones Ciencia e Innovación call is expected to open in May 2026 and close in June 2026, once the final missions are defined.

Application process
  1. Form the consortium and choose the mission: Create a consortium of 3–6 companies, appoint a coordinator and select the strategic mission.
  2. Prepare the documentation: Draw up the report, the R&D plan, the budget and the technical and financial documentation.
  3. Submit the application: Send it electronically to the CDTI within the deadline.
  4. Evaluation: CDTI evaluates the proposal based on mission, innovation, consortium capacity and impact.
  5. Decision and signing: If approved, the Financing Agreement is formalised.
  6. Execution and justification: 3–4-year project with annual reports and audits.
