Here are the three 2026 European Innovation Council (EIC) Pathfinder Challenges:

1. Advanced Materials for Miniaturised Energy Harvesting – New materials and micro-scale technologies to power autonomous devices.

2. Biotechnology for Healthy Ageing – Biotech solutions that prevent, delay, or reverse ageing-related conditions.

3. DeepRAP: Cognitive AI – Next-generation AI capable of deeper reasoning, abstraction, planning, and improved trustworthiness.

• Projects can receive up to €4 million in grants under both the Open and Challenge calls
• With a 100% funding rate via the lump sum model.
• Total Pathfinder 2026 budget: €262 million.

1-Step Application: Proposal Submission via the EU Funding & Tenders Portal. 

Proposals are scored (0–5) based on three criteria:

• Excellence – Ambition, novelty, and high-risk/high-gain vision.
• Impact – Potential to create new foundations for breakthrough technologies.
• Implementation – Quality of the consortium and work plan.

Tiebreakers: Higher excellence and impact scores, gender balance, SME involvement, and broader country participation.

All essential research-related expenses — including personnel, equipment, travel, and subcontracting — are covered within the lump-sum framework.

The total available budget for the EIC Pathfinder in 2026 is €262 million (comprising €166 million for the “Open” call + €96 million for the “Challenges” call).

The Pathfinder Open is a highly competitive programme, 2024 call funded 45 projects from 1,110 proposals—yielding a ~4.05% success rate. Overall, success rates for Open calls have declined from ~6–8% in earlier years to below 5%, while Challenge calls typically see ~10% success .

Projects are funded at 100% of eligible costs, including a 25% overhead on top.

An EIC Pathfinder project typically lasts 3 to 4 years, depending on the complexity and objectives of the proposed research.

The EIC Pathfinder supports early-stage consortia research (TRL 1–4) with 100% cost coverage up to €3–4M. The EIC Accelerator funds market-ready companies (TRL 5–9) with blended finance: up to €2.5M grant + €15M equity.

From 2026, Pathfinder projects are funded via a lump sum scheme, simplifying financial reporting while keeping the 100% funding rate of eligible costs.

In addition to funding, awardees gain access to EIC Business Acceleration Services, offering coaching, mentoring, investor access, and opportunities to collaborate with corporates and public buyers.

The EIC Pathfinder targets very early-stage technologies, typically at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 1 to 3 at the start of the project.

Projects are expected to reach TRL 3–4 by the end — meaning a proof of principle or experimental validation in a laboratory environment. The aim is to establish the scientific and technological basis for a potential breakthrough innovation, not yet a prototype or marketable product.
