The STMDROTOOLS project stems from extensive R&D efforts to address persistent challenges in machining and manufacturing sectors. Machine tool vibration is a costly issue, burdening the global industry with approximately €240 million per day. Current solutions like pre-tuned mass dampers often require frequent adjustments and lack adaptability, exacerbating productivity challenges.
In 2024, MAQ AB partnered with Gaspari and secured Eurostars funding for their innovative STMDROTOOLS project. Central to this initiative is the introduction of Rotational-Self-Tuning-Mass-Damper (RSTMD) technology. This breakthrough enables tools to autonomously adjust damping capacity based on vibration levels, facilitating deeper and faster material cutting with enhanced precision and surface finish. This advancement aims to potentially double the productivity of CNC milling and boring operations compared to current methods.
The STMDROTOOLS project promises profound impacts across key industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical, and energy. By integrating RSTMD technology, manufacturers can significantly reduce setup times, extend tool lifespan, and minimize vibration-related failures. These enhancements offer substantial productivity gains and cost reductions, potentially cutting energy consumption in manufacturing plants by up to 15%, amounting to an estimated €7 billion in annual global energy savings.
This initiative represents a significant stride in enhancing efficiency and driving innovation in the metalworking industry, establishing a new benchmark for machining technologies worldwide.
